Cider has been drunk in Kent for over 2,000 years with the Romans reportedly finding the locals already well organised in the cider making progress thanks to the abundance of apples in the area. Apple orchards were planted extensively in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries by which time almost every farm had its own cider orchard and press. While cider may have fallen out of favour or been taken over by mass producers over the past few decades, more recently the fruity drink is back in vogue thanks to the rise of artisan producers revisiting one of Kent’s best known exports.
